New EU-Funded Education Initiatives Launched in Borno State, North East Nigeria

On Friday June 28 two new European Union (EU) funded education initiatives were launched by Borno State authorities in Maiduguri.

Over 150,000 children and 2,500 teachers will directly benefit from the initiatives aimed at providing immediate education services and strengthening the existing education system in the Borno State, North East Nigeria.

The EU has earmarked €20 million for the initiatives which will be implemented by two consortiums each of which will receive €10 Million over the course of three years.

Street Child, UNICEF and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) will form one of these consortiums, working to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable children, including internally displaced children, children in host communities and returnees, as well as supporting inclusive, quality and equitable basic education in Borno State.

Millions of children require urgent support to recover from the impact of almost a decade of ongoing armed conflict in North East Nigeria.

An estimated 1.8 million people are displaced in the north-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and around 40% of that population is comprised of school-aged children between the ages of 3-17.

Recent data gathered on the key education indices in the North East of Nigeria indicate that 71% of girls are out of school in Borno State, the highest number in Nigeria.

Street Child were invited to the launch event in the capital of Borno State, Maiduguri, and the news as well as Street Child's logo was shown across Nigerian evening news channels.

Street Child will be directly receiving €2 million of the overall grant to launch a new programme in Borno State which will be implemented with 3 local Nigerian partners: Gender Equality Peace and Development Centre (GEPaDC), Intercommunity Development Social Organization (IDS), and Herwa Community Development Initiative.

With this program Street Child will promote child development and wellbeing by increasing access to quality, equitable and safe education for boys and girls affected by the conflict, and by strengthening the community-based education mechanism for sustainable education.

Through a multifaceted approach the program will support 20,000 children into formal and non-formal education including 5,000 children with integrated Qur’anic education.

Street Child will also build the capacity of 120 community volunteer teachers through teacher training and support in gaining Government-recognized teaching certificates as well as financial support through income-generating initiatives.

In addition, 30 temporary learning spaces (TLSs) will be established and provided with quality learning materials and equipment, and 28 temporary learning spaces will be renovated complete with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities to respond to the education needs.

The program will also provide psychosocial support to 20,000 children and 120 teachers.
